What to do in the case of Fire or Flood Damage
In the event of a pipe burst, fire/smoke damage or following flood waters entering a property, there are a number of precautions which can be taken by the householder to limit damage and danger to occupants.Fire or Smoke Damage
Following a fire or smoke damage occurrence:- Have an expert confirm the property is safe to enter
- Switch off electricity, heating & water if necessary
- Open windows for ventilation
- Don't attempt to clean or move items as they may be damaged further
- Discard of any food & packaging (noting the contents)
- Cover carpeted areas and couches if possible, if these are used soot particles may become embedded in the material
- Switch off all electrical appliances and do not use them until they have been approved for use by a professional contractor
Flood or Escape of water occurrence
Following a flood or an escape of water damage occurrence:- Switch off the electricity at the meter, heating & water if necessary
- If water is thought to be unsanitary do not come into contact with it
- Have a plumber carry out emergency repairs to leaking pipes
- Remove small quantities of standing water with towels
- When the flood waters have receded if possible lift couches, tables & chairs from the floor and place tin foil beneath the legs (this will prevent water from being absorbed further by the items)
